Tolkien's classic trilogy, which received its British and European Premiere when it opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London , celebrates its 100th performance , Monday, August 13, and its booking period has been extended to September 27, 2008. Tolkien's ability with languages inspired his studies in philology, the branch of linguistics concerned with the relationships and ancestry of languages. Tolkien worked as a philologist throughout his life, publishing articles on Anglo-Saxon texts, such as Beowulf, and co-editing an edition of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Tolkien's Middle-earth seems like a blessing and a curse: on the one hand, the meticulously constructed storylines and rich veins of lore; on the other, an ever-growing legion of critical fans who demand perfection.

Frodo and Sam consult with their loyal friends Merry and Pippin, and when the evil Witch-king appears with his nine servants the clever hobbits trick them into going into a mushroom-patch,disorienting the witches just long enough to escape the Shire. Merry and Pippin get kidnapped by forty-foot-high walking trees, but as the story goes on they convince the trees that it's best to be kind to strangers; the lesson is well-learned, and when Aragorn and the others arrive the trees welcome them with open limbs.
Gandalf and Aragorn agree to go with the four Hobbits, as does Glorfindel, adescendant of the ancient rulerAr-Pharazon, and Boromir, from the RoyalHouse of Gondor; also joining them are an Elf and a Dwarf who don'treally do much in the story but are there for comic relief. Gandalf sacrifices his life to destroy Radagast the Balrog, and the others escape the mountains while the battle rages. "But it is more important than ever that we destroy the Ring," Gandalf says, "for now the other Wizards know of it, and seek it as well. The Lord of the Rings tells of the quest undertaken by Frodo together with the fellowship of the ring: Gandalf the wizard; Merry, Pippin, and Sam, the hobbits; Gimli the dwarf; Legolas the elf; Boromir, man of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger named Strider.
